How to delete unwanted product categories

Step 1. In your site's Admin back end, go to "Shopping Cart" and click "Category Tree"

Step 2. Unassign Products

Note: to remove a product category, you must first unassign any products from the category in question. This can be confusing if you have lots of categories with the same names.

Here's a tip to make it easy:  First rename the categories you want removed with a prefix of "zzz". Then using your in-line product editor, filter by "zzz" in the category tree, select all the product assigned to it, and toggle the category icon to the red minus symbol. Save, and you have removed all the items from that category.

b) using your in-line product editor, filter by "zzz" in the category tree. Then select all the product assigned to it. Then click on the category listing for the first selected item, toggle the category icon to the red minus symbol. Save your category changes, and you have removed all the items from that category. (You can change up to 200 items at a time, so you may need to repeat this step a couple times).

note: if you have nested categories, you must first delete the lowest level categories. Then you can delete their parent categories.
